The scientific term '''Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers''' refers to a handful of species of vermiform parasites believed to have originated on Jojerykh, but have been reported in 1,031,290 locations, primarily in the Inner System and [[Extralegal Space]]. Their astonishing success is largely due their extreme hardiness and the early [[Nolnek Imperium]]'s lack of rigorous shipping regulations (resolved by the [[Treaty of Kilkin-Voss]]).

== Biology ==

Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers are 5.32 standard units in size, but specimens of up to 69.1 standard units have been reported. They are cold-blooded, but capable of surviving temperatures as high as 210°S when dormant. Their knobbly<ref>This is a technical term.</ref> purple skin also retains water extremely well, aided by having only a single orifice. They are opportunistic endoparasites which are capable of consuming almost anything organic, and a non-zero number of non-organic materials as well. They suffer no ill effects of chirality poisoning and thus are capable of eating or parasitizing most known organic life regardless of planet of origin.

== Behavior ==

When the ambient temperature drops below 21°S they begin to ambulate towards and cluster around any sources of heat, including radiators, active equipment and organics. Under conditions when food becomes scarce<ref>Rare, see above.</ref>, they have been known to leech fluids from organics. As they are unpleasant to look at and often carriers of disease this is undesirable. Finally, they have been known to enter organic bodies, where they occupy the digestive tract. This is also undesirable.

== History ==

Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers were adopted as a mascot by the Nolneki corporation '[[Akka!]]' from ZY 2788-89, who copyrighted their common name (Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers). Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers™ were subsequently incorporated into 'Akka!' corporation branding in heavily stylized form. This coincided with a 22.7% decrease in 'Akka!' stock over the following year and was rescinded before five financial segments had passed, however due to a common Nolneki bureaucratic technique it remains illegal to give Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers any other official name, including in scientific publications.

Vampiric Intestinal Cucumbers remain extant on Jojerykh despite the environmental collapse.

== History ==

The Wonder was first discovered in ZY 2234 by observing the perturbations of inner-system asteroids, which showed it on a vector emerging from what is now the [[Negated Zones]], however study of it was not considered a priority until it impacted the asteroid 3A 'Semilune' in ZY 2241, destroying it. It was subsequently acquired by an Iridium Throne expedition<ref>The official rationale was scientific curiosity, but really they couldn't risk letting the [[Nolnek Imperium]] get a hold of it. They barely even ''looked'' at the thing.</ref>, and placed in an unknown secure location.

The Destroyer of Semilune, which at that point was believed to be a negatively charged planet killer due to an Iridium Throne misinformation campaign, was used as a threat against the [[Nolnek Imperium]] on three separate occasions over the next five centuries. The Nolneks discovered the ruse in ZY 2766, kicking off the Cold Moon Crisis.

Sometime after the Crisis, the Iridium Throne came under pressure from the other Pentarchate members for its handling of the Wonder and lack of meaningful research conducted on it. The Wonder was eventually relocated to a specially designed chamber aboard [[Lambent Station]], which was chosen for its seclusion and (comparative) political neutrality, where it has remained.

With all respect to Selfmade emotional comprehension, some of the cultural context on the "humorous" quality of the meme appears to have been lost on the author. Not ''much'' more nuance - this is the Weunese public - but some. A factor in the Senator's rising popularity was that they had successfully molded their public image into a specific Weun political archetype, possessing youth, vigor, and what roughly translates as "moxy". The ''Ungbii'' is a moxy-bereft creature, barely qualifying as motile, and a knobbly external membrane evocative of a diseased anus. Using unflattering candid images of the Senator, 'Ungbiiposz' flipped them from their desired archetype to its antithesis - the sad, old, and gross legislator, a notion humerus because of its truth.

The role of Ungbiiposz in the 3095 consular elections is overstated here. Theoposz was always a paper tiger who looked good in theory but didn't have what it took to appeal to anyone outside of their activist base, and their initial popularity was largely the result of them not being Valanous. Ungbiiposz was merely reflective of the change in perceptions as they came under close scrutiny from outside of their cult following for the first time, not the cause of them. ''Hilarious'' national stereotypes aside, politicians do not lose elections because of common garden memes, not even on Weun.

I have no argument with the meat of Khalnik's addition here - even if I'm not in agreement with it, it's an important, and sober, counter-point in a multi-faceted political environment - but I will point out that if "common garden" memes held no significant sway over democratic processes, campaigns would not be spending on average 1/3 of their resources in public outreach trying to replicate them.

They barely even ''looked'' at the thing.</ref>, and placed in an unknown secure location.

The Destroyer of Semilune, which at that point was believed to be a negatively charged planet killer due to an Iridium Throne misinformation campaign, was used as a threat against the [[Nolnek Imperium]] on three separate occasions over the next five centuries. The Nolneks discovered the ruse in ZY 2766, kicking off the Cold Moon Crisis.

Sometime after the Crisis, the Iridium Throne came under pressure from the other Pentarchate members for its handling of the Wonder and lack of meaningful research conducted on it. The Wonder was eventually relocated to a specially designed chamber aboard [[Lambent Station]], which was chosen for its seclusion and (comparative) political neutrality, where it has remained.
